Two New Open Champions and One Defends!! Plus Three New Letter Div. Title Holders Help Make the 2015 Pensacola Open A Great Year!

Gordon Reid (GBR) retained the men’s singles title and Sabine Ellerbrock (GER) claimed the women’s singles title as the 12th Pensacola Open, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, drew to a close on Sunday, March 22 at Roger Scott Tennis Center, with the quad singles having gone to world No. 2 Dylan Alcott (AUS) on the penultimate day of play.

World No. 3 Reid followed up his victory in the men’s doubles partnering Belgian Joachim Gerard by defending his Pensacola Open title in the men’s singles final against world No. 7 ranked Dutchman Maikel Schefffers 64 63. Reid’s second singles title of 2015 was the 29th of his career and his seventh at ITF 1 Series level.

Like Reid, German world No. 4 Sabine Ellerbrock also justified her top seeding in the women’s singles as she came through her second three set match of the week to beat Dutch world No. 4 Marjolein Buis.

With Buis also contesting her second straight three set contest, Ellerbrock dominated the final set to seal a 64 46 61 victory and her second singles title of the season. Ellerbrock's win also saw her end the sequence of seven successive Dutch women's singles champions in Pensacola as she became the first German champion.

Buis ended the tournament as runner-up in the women’s singles and the women doubles after Brits Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley had claimed the doubles title.

World No. 2 Alcott’s 75 76(6) victory over world No. 1 David Wagner and 7-time Pensacola Open champion in the quad singles final saw the Australian extend his unbeaten sequence for the season to 16 matches and secure his first title in Pensacola.  Wagner and fellow American Nick Taylor left Florida with their eighth Pensacola Open quad doubles title in a row.

Chris Herman, a rising young star in US tennis, claimed the A div. Singles title taking down the veteran Dan Lachman 64 61.  In the B div. Matt McManus prevailed over Robbie Sullivan 64 76(6) and Chris Etheridge came back in dominating fashion over Enrigue Aguilar 26 62 61 in the C final.  All three Letter Division champions claim their first titles at the  2015 Pensacola Open.

It was a definite pleasure to host our 12th tournament.  I'm always amazed at the quality of play and the high caliber of players that come from every continent.  I'm very proud and thankful of all our volunteers and sponsors that make this event possible and we're already looking forward to making 2016, a paralympic year, a great one as well!
